At the LiNC Lab we try our best to make science a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive space. We present here our lab statement on EDI which we developed in a process of consultation as a group. If you have thoughts on how we can improve the principles/plans we express here, feel free to share them with us.

We first wish to acknowledge that the LiNC lab, based at McGill University and Mila, is located on unceded Indigenous lands that are the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation. As individuals who have the privilege of living and working here, we believe it is our responsibility to recognize and learn about the long and rich history of Indigenous peoples on this land, which extends up to the present day.

Our lab's mission is to advance our understanding of the general principles of natural and artificial intelligence, and to train the next generation of researchers who will carry on this work. We hold that these goals are best achieved when people with a diversity of backgrounds and experiences come together in a respectful, curious and stimulating environment.

We believe that:

• The values of equity, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to building a healthy community.

• More richly diverse environments prompt stimulating conversations and open-mindedness, both of which are key to creativity, productivity and well-being in a team.

• Science thrives when a diversity of voices and minds are brought to bear on challenging questions.

• We recognize that discrimination can be based on a broad range of factors: race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, and many more.

• We recognize that disparities in opportunities (socioeconomic status, familial connections, familial responsibilities, etc.) can result in disparities that do not relate to one’s potential to be a valued member of the lab.

• We are committed to understanding, and eliminating such biases in the lab. Indeed, our application form is designed with the goal of allowing for a fairer candidate selection process.

• We acknowledge that this is an active learning process for us, and we welcome further discussions for how we can improve.
