Dr. Chen Sun

I am a postdoc fellow at the University of Montreal and Mila, interested in creating brain (especially hippocampal)-inspired AI. My PhD was in the neuroscience department at MIT, under the supervision of Susumu Tonegawa. During my PhD I found representations in the hippocampus that are tuned to discrete variables ("events") as fundamental units rather than continuous variables, suggesting a different organizing principle for episodic experience (Sun et al 2020 Nature Neuroscience).

Before my PhD, I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge. Before that, I grew up in London, Ontario, and was on Team Canada to the International Mathematical Olympiad (2008-2010). I enjoy playing the piano and mindlessly roaming Netflix.

Current projects

  • Differential Target Propagation

  • Modularity in brain-inspired AI

Previous projects

  • Discrete hippocampal representations 1

  • Neural representations in entorhinal cortex 2 and 3

  • Miscellaneous projects (helping some friends) 4 and 5
